Workbook I

Think or Know?

Newspapers, magazines, and books- in fact, writings of all kinds often include both statements of fact and statements of opinion. In the story "Sasquatch Alias 'Bigfoot' " the author states that "humans from various parts of the earth have their own physical differences." This is a statement of fact because it can be proven by going to many countries and seeing the people or, more simply, by looking at pictures of people from other countries.

The author also states that the manlike monster of the Pacific Northwest might have come from the same place as the Indians and Eskimos-Asia. This is a  statement of opinion because it has not been definitely proven. The reader must decide whether or not the evidence makes the opinion convincing, one that might be the truth.

The following statements are paragraph topic sentences based on the story. Read each topic sentence and label it fact or opinion. Then refer back to the story to find three to six sentences that give details to

support each topic sentence. Write the sentences to complete each paragraph.

Part of the first paragraph has been completed for you.
